This genus is founded on an impression of the expanded part of a gladius in a mass of rocki it was evidently thin, and as no part of its substance remains, is supposed to have been corneous in texture. Klongate, hub-ovate, very thin, anterior end broadlv angulated. no mid-rib; slipper either minute or wanting. Surface marked by numerous, irregular, small wrinkles, which radiate backwards and outwards, partly from the anterior end. and partlv from an imaginary median line. P. FOLrAT1 s. Gabb. PL 105. Neocomian. California. Family V. SEPIOLID. Gcnux SEPIOLA, Leach. Body and head smooth beneath, cartilage of mantle narrow, linear, oblong. Tvpical. f The sessile arm» with two alternating rows of cups to their ends. S. Sep1ola, Linn. PL 65, figs. 229-237. Body oblong, smooth, rounded behind, tlesh-color with blotches and spots of dark purple, paler ventrally; fins leaf-like, rounded, dorsal, and subeentral as to the length of the body; arms short, the lateral ones longest; the suckers of the ventral arms are crowded and four-ranked on their tips in the female; tentacles very long in the male, mnch shorter in the female. Shell with thickened margin. Length, 2 to 3 inches. S. Rondeleti, Orb., is the male of this species, and I include here also S. major of Targioni-Tozzetti, as 1 cannot find distinctive characters of suflicient importance to separate three Mediterranean species, as the Italian author has done.
