Sidney College, founded on the site of a Monastery of Franciscans, or Grey Friars, was established in this Town in the reign of Henry III. but at the Reformation it was granted by Henry VIII. to the Master and Fellows of Trinity College, and of them purchased by the executors of Frances Sidney, Countess of Sussex (the widow of Thomas Radcliffe, third Earl of Sussex) who, by will, in 1588, bequeathed 50001. exclusive of other property to found a College for one Master, ten Fellows, and twenty Scholars, which number, owing to the bequest being insufficient to defray casual expences, was reduced. Its present establishment consists of a Master, 11 Fellows, a Mathematical Lecturer, several Scholars and Exhibitioners, and has 6 livings in its gift. On returning from this College we turn to the left, and after passing Green Street, arrive at the King's Head Inn, from which place conveyance may be had by Coaches to various parts of the kingdom. MARKET STREET is about sixty yards further, and at the corner of the same,--Trinity Church, built in the form of a cross...
