Not illustrated.1899 Excerpt: ... busily employed turning out flannelette of all colors, besides cotton towelling, of which there is a large home consumption, and which is printed in a variety of pictorial designs, samples of which Mr. Tsuji very graciously presented me on my departure. The firm is also shortly opening a calico-printing branch, for which the latest machinery has been already erected in a block of buildings adjacent to the main structures. After discussing the customary cup of tea, we finally steered for our hotel, after a day of the most varied experiences, and a continuous jinrickisha ride of ten hours on end, so kaleidoscopic in its changes, however, that we had no time dwell on its length. The seventh day of our stay at Kyoto was devoted to a visit, in our best bib and tucker, to the Imperial Palace (Gosho), permission having been obtained by Mr. Ogawa, of the Nippon Yusen Kaisha, as a mark of special favor--the public, as a rule, not being admitted. We wandered about at the heels of our attendant, another bringing up the rear, for a considerable time--first having signed the visitors' book, in which we were enjoined, by a notice in the ante-chamber, to disclose our names, titles, nationality, etc., and were also told to remove our boots and leave our topcoats, umbrellas, or other impedimenta with our attendants, who were not permitted to follow us unless we happened to be nobles or other titular dignitaries. Not fulfilling this condition, we left these with our jinrickisha coolies. From this room we were introduced into "the pure and cool hall." It gets this refreshing title from a small stream running under the steps leading to it, and its coolness was real and most welcome, for the thermometer was at 80 outside.
