Excerpt: ... THE LYNX--Another animal of the cat kind, that is not a native of our island. In the mountainous regions of many parts of Europe this short tailed fierce cat is found; it is at least between two and three times as large as the wild cat, and being equally agile, as well as larger, the Lynx is also fiercer in proportion. Its ears are peculiarly tufted, and the eyes are truly clear and fine, but no animal, when excited, can shew a more diabolical expression of face than this, as may often be witnessed by any one, who should happen to stand before its cage in the Zoological gardens at the time it is fed. In its native mountain woods it lives chiefly upon birds and small quadrupeds. A species, closely similar to this, is found in Canada aud other parts of North America, where it is much sought after, on account of its fine skin, the fur of which is close and prettily marked. THE BROWN BEAU. Another creature not now found in this country, though not rare in Norway and other uncultivated parts of Europe. Though a large and powerful animal, it is a very harmless one, and contents itself chiefly with berries and vegetable productions, and it is only when it cannot meet with these in sufficient quantities, that it takes flesh. See what a large body the brown bear has, and how clumsy and yet comfortable he looks, without a tail and with so thick a coat of hair. Clumsy as he looks, he can climb any tree strong enough to bear him, and can do deeds of pole climbing, that would puzzle the most accomplished man who ever tried such dangerous work. The bear knows how to balance himself, and these thick legs and awkward looking paws are excellently fitted to enable him to hug by. Few creatures are so strong as the bear.
