It might, in some measure, have been making assurance doubly sure, but it would have been a fault on the right side, and they are not times for the clergy to dispense with additional securities, when they have got whig contrivers to deal with. But no--the solicitors, it seems, must have a feeling in every case of distress; a linger in every ecclesiastical pie. Cheap law is what the poor clergy and the little farmer want, but I fear we have got to the wrong shop for it, cheap law for poor pockets may be a very good thing, but it operates like plague and pestilence on the great leading practitioners, and therefore, in all likelihood, we shall have the market price kept pretty well up. Had the decision of the commissioners been, in any case, final, we might have looked to them with a sort of broken comfort; but, alas! they are only final where they are fatal. CLAUSE LXIX--LXXI. Rent-charge to ba lia'tle to Parochial and County Rates--Rent-chartje to be subject to the same encumbrances and incidents as Tithe before this Act. Here we see that though every thing valuable' has been taken from the clergy, every thing " vile and refuse" is suffered to remain. The laying our tithes to the rates unequally, and often exorbitantly, was one of the great pests we had to contend with under the old system, whenever a farmer took it into his head to cast. This was his rod in pickle for the parson, and a villainous scourge it often was; and now, after a most shameful deduction from our legal incomes, which, I contend, they had no more right to reduce than they have to reduce the estates of the nobility and gentry about us, do we still find ourselves saddled with this sickening incumbrance, this alarming night mare th...
