Excerpt: ... CHAPTER V. It was not till a week later that Theodor again saw Recha. It happened one day that he set out to call upon one of his comrades who lodged in the Ulica Gelona, the half-deserted street leading towards the river. He had nothing particular to say to this comrade, who was a harum-scarum young fellow, always in difficulties and never out of humour, but he had a sort of vague idea that he would invite his fellowlieutenant to take a ride with him. Of late he had discovered that solitary rides are apt to be irksome, and sitting alone at home had become impossible, because his sitting-room was haunted by a ghost,--a ghost that had a white face and black eyes. As he turned into the Ulica Gelona, Theodor perceived that a woman was walking some dozen paces in front of him; she was the only other foot-passenger in the street besides himself. The ringing of his spurs against the pavement seemed to disquiet her; twice she half turned her head over her shoulder, and at last she stood still and faced round. It was exactly at the door of the house that Theodor intended to enter that she had stopped. Theodor, recognising Recha Wotf, also stood still. In order to enter the house he would have had to pass close to her, even to brush past her, and, for some reason or other, he shrank from doing so. Recha's expression when she turned had been merely disquieted, and perhaps a little impatient; seeing Theodor, she became disturbed and her white face grew a shade whiter. In a minute she had recovered herself, up to a certain point; she returned the sorrowfully intense gaze which Theodor, unknown to himself, had fixed upon her, with one of marked defiance, the reason of which he did not immediately understand, and then, turning again, made another step forward.
