In vain is the net spread in the eyes of that which hath wings. Whilst the soul is kept aloft, there is little clanger of snares below; we lose our high estimation of things before we can be drawn to any sin. When adverse winds and waves arise, And in my heart despondence sighs,--When life her throng of care reveals, And weakness o'er my spirit steals,--Grateful I hear the kind decree, That " as my day, my strength shall be." " Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty." It is good for us, certainly, to find hardships and enmities and contempt here, and to find them frequent, that we may not think them strange, but ourselves strangers. This keeps the affections more clear and disengaged, and sets them upwards. Thus the Lord makes the world displeasing to his own, that they may turn to him, and seek all their consolation in himself. When dark temptations spread their snares, And earth with charms allures, And when thy soul, oppressed with fears, The world's assault endures, Then let thy Father's friendly voice Thy fainting spirit cheer, And bid thy trembling heart rejoice: " Fear not," thy God is near.
