The "hidden path," by which we mount from the center of the earth to the hemisphere opposite ours, symbolizes that part of the way of salvation in which the soul, having meditated on evil, gradually draws away from every thought which is connected with this evil. The inclined plain The Ahyss of vice considered in the light of right reason around the mountain of the Earthly Paradise (where this path debouches) is the state of the soul which has come forth from the slavery of sin and seeks a means of rising to the felicity of activity according to virtue. This means is figured by the "passage" which leads up the mountain to the "summit" occupied by the garden where "man is happy," 1 that is, leaving out the imagery, to the felicity alluded to above. The "noble" faculty of the mind which counsels and points out that means is impersonated by Cato, who rules over all the ascent of the mountain from the plain which surrounds it. He is, then, the discernment of selection, which is not hampered and is turned in the right direction, that is, free will?-The habit by whose grace we advance in right activity, and hence also in the felicity which proceeds from it, is impersonated by Matilda, who, on the table-land on the top of the mountain, is the guide for those who would visit the garden which covers it.
