We may regard this Sabbath at Capernaum as marking The Close Of The Second Year of our Lord's Ministry. It was a year of intense and marvellous activity. The open breach with the rulers at Jerusalem, which marked its commencement, rendered it useless for Jesus to revisit Jerusalem, but did not cripple His ministry in Galilee. Among the most memorable and characteristic events of these twelve months were the ordination of the Twelve Apostles, and their subsequent mission; the message from John, and his death; "the day of parables;" and some of our Lord's greatest miracles, including two instances of raising the dead, the stilling of the storm, the walk on the water, and the feeding of the five thousand. The double shadow which fell on the close of this year of ministry, in the misguided attempt of the Galileans to make Jesus king, and the defection of many of His disciples, indicated that the time was drawing near for the close of Christ's Galilean ministry. For a season, however, it might still be said to those so long and abundantly favoured with His presence (as He said afterwards to the people of Jerusalem), "Yet a little while is the light with you.
