And when I thought of ages, and still ages further back, I stood o'erwhelmed, and wondering, in my spirit's breathless track. Eternity before us, is as open as the sky--Fur stretched on either hand around in bright infinity, And man perchance may feel it, tho' he may not comprehend, For he shall be eternal too, in life that cannot end. But that behind has passed away, and shrinks before our look, For its glance is bright and rapid that no mortal eye may brook; As the heaven behind us far beyond, that never may be seen, For earth and all its deepening clouds and darkness roll between. 'Twas not for nought our fathers reared Yon vane upon the spire, That caught when first the sun appeared, Its gleams of eastern fire; To rouse the ransomed ones to meet Before their Saviour's face, And e'en in morning hours to greet Within that " holy place;" When morn hy morn, with willing voice And sorrow's holiest tear, Before His Altar to rejoice With love that banished fear, They came to think of Him that died, And pour their praises there, With hearts that hope had purified And kindled into prayer. Blessed are they that wait for Him As those who wait for morn, And e'en while sight is faint and dim 'Mid sinners' faithless scorn, Will yet endure unto the end, Not doubting that their Lord Himself, the morning light will send, And keep His plighted word.
