Are not four languages too much for girls? Professor. I should think so, but no doubt there are girls and girls. In making out an ideal education it is necessary to determine the best; in practically educating, the second or third best may often prove more desirable. But Greek stands on a different footing, educationally, to Latin. I consider that a knowledge of the Latin language and grammar is not only such a help to the mastery of French and English, that those who would acquire either will do so most economically through Latin: but also that we have practically no choice about it, but that it is, for persons of ordinary power, the only way in which they can master these. I really do not see how it is possible, without an impracticable expenditure of strength, either to master grammar through English, or to master English itself without Latin. And if Miss Tryanon is right, an acquaintance with Greek Etymology is most advisable, perhaps essential, for securing the franchise of English books. But the use of Greek as our young men study it is different. We want Latin mainly for the sake of mastering our own language, French, and the vocabulary of modern thought, and of obtaining an understanding of modern social thought itself. We need Greek as supplying us. with an adequate vocabulary for science and philosophy; as a standard of literature; as opening to us new forms of thought, and thereby setting us free from the trammels and grooves of current thought.
