This, to say nothing of the blasphemy, is detestable in every respect; and nothing is more calculated to outrage the feelings of a sensible man. DISTRIBUTING. Distributing, or conveying the different sorts of letter to their respective apartments, is commonly the first of a compositor's practical exercises; though it would be found more safe and advantageous, were this custom reversed, and composing made antecedent to distributingi which depends upon a perfect knowledge of what is, or ought to be, contained in each of the different boxes in a pair of cases. But as the disposition of sorts differ in almost every printing office, more or less, it follows, that such irregularities must have their effect accordingly; of which we do not want for instances. The first which offers itself to our observation is, the loss which a compositor sustains every time he changes his place of work; for, being unacquainted with the situation of each sort, he is hindered, for some time, in his quick and ready way of distributing, which might easily be prevented, were those who establish new houses to follow one uniform method; indeed, to those who are already established, the advantages that would accrue by changing, when necessary to accomplish this desirable end, would more than compensate for the trouble. For this purpose we give a plan of a pair of cases, which, in all its details, we believe is more in use than any other throughout the country; not because we think it better than any other, but because we know that uniformity is absolutely necessary to avoid confusion in an office, and loss of time to journeymen.
