Not illustrated. 1819 Excerpt: ...to what is called the ascension, is but "a few days, apparently not more than three "or four, and that all the circumstances are "reported to have happened nearly about the "same spot, Jerusalem, it is, I believe, im"possible, to find in any story on record, so "many and such glaring absurdities, contra"dictions and falsehoods, as are in those "books." Gentlemen, I have expressed my obligation to his lordship for having saved me from the task of defending the remaining passages inserted in the indictment; I wish I had to thank him for saving me from the task of defending this: as the matter now stands, however, it is my duty to defend it. XXVI. men, this passage is the result of a serious j examination of the books in question, which begins at page 82, and ends at page 91: if you will have the goodness to retire and read it with attention, I think you will find it difficult to say the conclusion is not warranted by the premises; I have myself made a similar examination, and I find it impossible to deny that there are, at least apjmrenl inconsistencies and contradictions in those books, which it is difficult to reconcile: I hold in my hand a more extensive and laboured examination of them, which demonstrates to me, that those inconsistencies and contradictions are numerous and important; and that they muit be so is evident from the number of concordances of the Gospel, with which learned divines have thought it necessary to favour the public; had they seen in those books no apparent inconsistencies and contradictions of importance, it would have been folly to compose such laboured and voluminous works, with a view to reconcile them to each other.
