ANNUAL REPORTS The annual reports of the Commissioner of Pensions are included in the annual reports of the Secretary of the Interior, and are also issued separately in pamphlet form. From the organization of the Pension Office in 1833 to 1840, the duties of the Commissioner were prescribed by the President; from 1840 to 1849 the office was under the direction of the Secretaries of War and of the Navy, and from 1849 to date the Secretary of the Interior has exercised the supervisory power. OFFICE OF INDIAN AFFAIRS 1888. 1890. 1891. 1894. The supervision of Indian Affairs was originally committed to the Secretary of War. Under him was appointed first a superintendent of Indian trade, who subsequently became Superintendent of Indian Affairs. By act of Congress approved July 9, 1832, provision was made for the appointment of a Commissioner of Indian Affairs, to be an officer of the War Department. On the organization, however, of the Department of the Interior in 1849, his office was made one of the bureaus of said Department, with which it has since been connected.
