In Compound Proportion, two or more ratios are given, and the antecedent of another whose consequent is required. Rule.--Place the odd term to the right hand, and take every pair of terms and state as in Simple Proportion; reduce them to the lowest name, and multiply all the antecedents for a new antecedent, and all the consequents for a new consequent. The answer is found as in Simple Proportion. EXAMPLE. If 6 men, working 13 days 2 hours, a day being 12 hours, mow 24 acres of meadow, in how many days, of 14 hours each, will 16 men mow 448 acres? 16 men: 6 men fl: 3 14 hours: 12 hours m 1 7: 1 18 d 2 „ d 24 acres: 448 acres 2:28' J 5376:3"2256 = fi: 84 To cancel we divide 448 and 16 by 16, making the terms 1: 28 24 and 12 by 12, making the terms 2: 1 14 and 6 by 2, making the terms 7: 8 The terms may be farther reduced by dividing 28 by 7 and 2. All the terms of a Compound Proportion sum, may be represented as a fraction, all the consequents and the odd term written above the line, and all the antecedents below the line.
