Not illustrated. 1906 Excerpt: ...the case of a small parcel particularly, it is advisable for the consignee to make a note of the gross weight at the time of delivery in the presence of the carter and insert this gross weight opposite his signature on the Delivery Sheet. If any of the goods have been stolen during transit, the package will weigh less than when handed over to the railway company, and any claim that may be made will thus be substantiated. Not only should all evidence in the support of a claim be kept until it has been settled, but the railway company should be informed of any discrepancy immediately, so that the agent may have an opportunity of inspecting any package. CONSIGNEE and CARTAGE. There are two conditions under which the railway companies do not deliver goods: (1) where the consignee prefers to do his own cartage from the station so as to claim a rebate, (2) where the consignee resides out of the district or area included in the ordinary rate for carriage. In both these cases it is the practice of the railway company to send to the consignees an Advice Note of the arrival of any consignments so that consignees may make arrangements for carting. After the receipt of the advice, the goods should be removed as quickly as possible, as the railway company is permitted to charge a fee for demurrage or warehouse rent if the goods are not cleared within 48 hours from the time of arrival. As the railway rates for classes 1 to 5 include cartage, care should betaken to obtain the rebate on paying the carriage account. The charges for the carriage of goods, if not prepaid by the consignor, are required to be paid on delivery, to the carter, unless the firm to whom they are delivered has a credit account with the railway company.
