But, Philip, if you say that the society of Jesus Christ receives all people into itself, is it not by this fact exactly the very kind of power that promises to absorb and swallow up the nation in itself, in so alarming a manner that you can easily account for the horror and dread that all violent national partisans will have of a power so universal and so unlimited in its jurisdiction? It is to this great truth that the Scripture prophecy points, where the prophet says, " that "the kingdom and people that will not serve Thee "shall perish, and the Gentiles shall be wasted with "desolation" (Isaias lx. 12).
