NE X T to the free and bountiful Donation of Gofpel Bleffings, the great Love and Goodnefs of God our Saviour is manifefted, in making proper Provifion to keep a Scnfc ot his Love therein, frefh and lively upon our Hearts. For as the Grace or Favour of God to Men in Chrift Jefus is a moral Mean, or Motive, which is intended, and in its own Nature admirably adapted, to have its Effefts upon our Minds, to produce in them Principles and Difpofitions, correfponding to the Divine Liberality towards us-, it is plain, it can have thofc happy Effefts, only fo far as we underftand it, reflect upon it, and endeavour to give it a proper Influence upon our Spirits. Therefore, God hath been pleafed to appoint all the Ordinances of Religion, for our fpiritual InftrucYion and Improvement; but more particularly Baptifm and the Lord's Supper, which are perpetual Memorials of the Covenant of the Lord our God, or of the noble Deed of Gift, which he has freely beftowed upon us in Jefus Chrift our Lord, and of the Duty to which we-are thereby obliged. Baptifrn is a Pcrfonal, or Family Ordinance, to be adminiftred, ordinarily, in every Chriftian Family, at the Birth of every Child, as a Token,.or Memorial, in all Generations, of the Intereft which that Child and that Family have, in the Gofpel Promife, made to Abraham, and republiftied by Chrift, I will be a Cod to thee, and to thy Seed after thee; and of the Obligations they gre under to a pure and holy Life.
