They represent the Eastern and European idea of money, which is diametrically opposed to the interests of the United States. The European plan suits them much better than the American plan. THE EUROPEAN PLAN OF FINANCE HAS COST OUR PEOPLE MORE THAN THE WAR. "The European plan, which these international bimetallists are laboring to preserve, has already cost the people of the United States ten times as much as the great Civil War from 1861 to 1865 cost them. Conceding that all the bonds, stocks and securities now payable in gold of 25.8 grains to the dollar would have to be paid in gold of that weight or its equivalent in silver, which is all that any gold bug can claim, then the free coinage of silver by the greatest commercial nation of the world, would necessarily greatly increase the bullion value of 412)4 grains of silver or greatly reduce the bullion value of 25.8 grains of gold in the United States. By doubling the amount of redemption money in the United States the value of money would be reduced, while gold would be worth less or silver more than now in this country. This would add thousands of millions of dollars to the value of property in our country and double the earnings and means of payment of our people, who could pay the principal and interest on what they owe the Old World twice as easily as now, and would not wrong the bondholders-and capitalists of the gold standard nations at all, as they would get what their contract calls for, and would continue to weigh the bullion as they have always done. But it would stop the rise in gold and the fall in silver and protect the people of our country against future confiscation, and thus be worth...
