( n) Knaveries; Lawyers, as well as Moralists, allow the Crime to lie in the Intention, and not the Action; and if Mr. fV----d, in his Visitations to his Mother's Pocket, thought he committed no Theft; I, a Lawyer and a Moralist, mall make no Scruple to affirm, that no Theft was committed. On the contrary, the plundering his Mother before she was up, is an Indication that he was addicted to rife early; which, I avouch, is a Virtue much to be commended in Striplings of his Age; at least, I must, for my own Part confess, with Shame and Confusion of Face, that my poor Mo. ther has many a Morning ascended three Pair of Stairs, to the great Hazard of her Lungs, for which I can never sufficiently thank her, in order to rouse me from my Nest, at the Expence of a great many Words and some Stripes--"I have fre' quently betrayed my Trust, and have "more than once spent Money I took in "the House, in buying Fruits/ Tarts, &c. tf to satisfy my sensual Appetite." This Article is so far from being Truth, that-1 shall presently prove it a spurious and scandalous Interpolation; for, in a Paragraph sequent to this (Page n and 12) he fays. fays, " My Mother-was very careful of my "Education, and always kept me in my "tender Years (for which I can never suf"ficiently thank her) from intermeddling "in the least with the publick Business." Now I need not spend much Ink in demonstrating that it was utterly impossible to betray a Trust, where no Trust was admitted. This is the third Time I have had Occasion to rebuke J--sH-tt-n, and I hope he will take Shame to himself. Since, however, the sensual Satisfaction of eating Tarts, &c. is glanced at above, I shall readily join with the Writer, in inveighiog against so dangerous a Piece of Corruption.
