FERRANPINO Lorp howled the winds--the waves burst tempestuously upon the shore,--the lightning blazed through the darkness of the clouds; Heaven and earth were in uproar.--Still lay Ferrandino beneath the waving cypresses, and lost in thought, heeded not the raging of the storm. Not far from Malta stands the little uninhabited island of Lampidosa, gloomy and lonesome, but its secure harbour affords a safe retreat for vessels driven thither by the stress of weather. In the middle of this island is a little chapel, dedicated to the Virgin ; none, in quitting the harbour, whether Christian or Mahomedan, omit to leave behind them ammunition or provisions, as a votive offering for the protection they h'ave received. Whosoever needs either, deposits an equivalent in gold; and galleys come from Malta, yearly, to carry the offerings to the chapel of our Lady at Trapani, in Sicily. the rain did not fall so violently as before, and Ferrandino returned to his dwelling. Sestoni, the hermit of Lampidosa,. was kneeling in prayer before the altar. The rain poured down in torrents; the thunder rolled more heavily, and the earth trembled. Ferrandino sought for shelter and protection in the chapel. Sestoni still knelt in silence before the altar of the Holy One. A vivid flash of lightning blazed through the chapel, followed by a heavy clap of thunder. The whole building shook---the consecrated lamps clashed together--and the image of the Holy Virgin seemed to totter. Ferrandino started up, and rushed to the door of the chapel.
