Vowel sounds are produced by vibrations of the vocal cords, without the intervention of any other organ of speech. Consonant sounds are heard only in connection with a vowel; they are produced with the assistance of the organs of speech. Vowel sounds are sometimes united in the same syllable; the combination is termed a diphthong. Vowels All other unmarked consonants have their usual English sounds.
