Wood, Esq., Member of the Legislative Council, called in and examined. 1. Chairman. From what division does traffic flow into Graham's Town at present?--From Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage, Burghersdorp, and Somerset, in a north-east line from Cradock, Queenstown, Beaufort, Whittlesea, Fort Beaufort, and a good deal from King William's Town. 2. What trade from Uitenhage?--Uitenhage does something considerable, not from the town itself, but from the neighbourhood; for instance, Langekloof, Oliphant's River, and even several parts of the western districts. The trade consists principally in brandy, dried fruits, large quantities of meal, &c.; and all our whipsticks and tobacco come thence. 3. Does the whole of the Cradock trade go into Graham's Town?--A great deal of it passes through Graham's Town to Port Elizabeth; some of it may go via Zuurberg, but a very large proportion passes through Graham's Town. 4. What portion of the Somerset traffic passes through BAILROADB--1., Mr. Barry, Mr. Jarvis, Mr. Armstrong, Aud itor-General, Mr. Darnell, Mr. Solomon. Mr. a. Wood. Graham's Town?--Not much; they have a direct trade 29th April, through the Zuurberg. 5 With Somerset, do you include Bedford, or separate them?--I separate them The direct trade which is carried on through Somerset and Graham's Town is, I think, less than between Bedford and Graham's Town: the quantity of business done between the Somerset district and Graham's Town is considerable. 6. Is the trade between King William's Town and Graham's Town considerable?--Yes; the business between the two places is considerable, and, as a necessary consequence...
