'dvLL things in heaven and in earth, and in every place Qcs throughout the whole universe, are, and always were, and always will be, under the control and government of the Mighty God who made them all. He is " the Blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords." No creature is able for a moment to hinder Him from bringing His purposes to pass. Nevertheless, the Lord Jesus teaches us to lift up our hearts and voices to Him, and beseech Him to take His seat upon His throne; as if He were a King driven away from His dominions, like David when he fled away from his rebellious subjects, and when his ungrateful son, Absalom, seized upon his royal palace in Jerusalem, t We know that nothing can happen in this world, or in. any other world, without His permission, and we do not know why He permits His enemy to rule in the hearts of the children of men. But so He certainly does, for His holy laws are trampled under foot, and His place is so filled up and possessed by the evil one that holy Scripture calls that spirit of darkness "the god of this world." $ It is by men's own choice that they are ruled by that enemy of all goodness, and that 1 Tim. vi. 15. t 2 Sam. xv. 14. J 2 Cor. if. 4. may be set down as one reason why the Good Lord should allow him to have dominion over them. To punish their wicked folly, He leaves them to be " taken captive by the devil at his will," and to suffer all the miseries wherewith that merciless master delights to plague his slaves.
