Excerpt: ... II. THE OMNIPOTENCE OF GOD. Gen. xvii. 1. I am the Almighty God. In entering on the consideration of the Omnipotence of God, it would be unwise and unedifying to attempt a metaphysical discussion on the nature of power, or on the way in which our ideas of power are originally acquired. The end at which we aim will be best accomplished, by directing our thoughts to some of the most striking and impressive manifestations of that Power which extends to every thing not involving a contradiction, or arguing an imperfection of character in the great and glorious Being to whom it is ascribed. That we may yield our minds to deep and salutary impressions of the almighty Power of God, let us direct our views, First, To The Work Of Creation--that first and most stupendous exertion of Omnipotence. To a certain extent, power belongs to man. He can operate upon materials which lie within his grasp. He can impress upon many substances new forms. He can effect new combinations, and adapt many of the productions of nature to purposes, which his ingenuity may suggest and his comfort may require. But can he create? Can he call into existence a single atom which existed not before? With him and with every other creature, however mighty in power, it is absolutely impossible. Were all the skill and all the energies of men and of angels to be combined, it would transcend their power, to give existence to one grain of sand--to one single particle of dust. How vast then and immeasurable is the distance, between the most exalted creature and him who can create! How far surpassing comprehensipn is that Power, which gave being to the universe!
