In recent years Arab countries have increased their research and development performance, but they have been severely handicapped by limited inter-Arab collaboration in scientific research and by political economies dominated by technological dependence and corruption. Science, Development, and Sovereignty in the Arab World examines the recent scientific research performance of Arab countries and their organizations in relation to their socio-economic development. A. B. Zahlan highlights factors that have affected Arab countries' advancement in research and development. Using standard international indicators to evaluate research output, human capital, economic performance, and agriculture and health standing, he determines the effects of international cooperation and the prevailing political economy on scientific development.

About the Author
A.B. ZAHLAN was a Professor of Physics at the American University of Beirut (1956-1976). Since then he has been involved in consulting in science policy in the Arab world.
