Not illustrated. 1864 Excerpt: ... was the special and only one thus remarkably distinguished among the apostles, or, as Winer explains it, "the only abortion among the apostles." In his remarks on 1 Tim. vi. 12, Alford observes concerning the clause, dywvifav Tov Kiaov ayZva rfjs rrio-rews, "Strive the good strife of the faith, not 'of faith,' abstract and subjective: but that noble conflict which the faith,--the profession of the soldier of Christ, entails on him." While in some passages, 6 Xpiarot; is correctly rendered the Christ, the is carelessly omitted from other passages, as if 6 Xpiaro; designated the Messiah's name, rather than his office. It is indeed true that this official term does appear to have been employed simply as a Name, in some of those passages where it occurs Without the article; but wherever it Has the article in the original, the article ought undoubtedly to be reproduced in an English version. By its arbitrary omission however, the precise import of the original is considerably 148 THE SINNER. obscured and misrepresented in such passages as Matt. ii. 4; xxii. 42; xxiv. 5; Mark xii. 35; Luke xx. 41. The publican's prayer, as recorded in Luke xviii. 13, affords another clear specimen of the injury which results from neglect of the definite article:--Greek.---'0 0tos IXdaOrjTi fioi Tw ap.a.pTi.tj. Authorized Version.--God be merciful to me a sinner. It is quite unwarrantable thus to treat rp as if it were a. meaningless superfluity. This little word evidently imparts to the publican's language, a deep pointed significance which ought to be carefully preserved. The publican said, not merely fioi dfMapTwXw, "to me a sinner," but fui Ta afiapTwXa, "to me the sinner." It is as if, in the depth of his contrition, he had expressly n...
