Not illustrated. 1908 Excerpt: ...so that if a farmer already has an engine or is considering its purchase for general farm work, he, by using it for electric lighting purposes, is simply utilizing this engine for one more of its many possible fields of activity. The general utility of the engine, will, of itself, be sufficient to make it a profitable investment, irrespective of any lighting possibilities. With these facts in mind, it can be stated that an electric lighting equipment, consisting of a dynamo, and wiring, and including the engine, will probably cost more than will any other system of lighting equipment which might be under consideration. If, however, the general value of the engine for farming work be considered sufficient to make it a profitable investment, irrespective of its use for electric lighting, the engine itself would not legitimately be chargeable to the lighting plant, and in this instance, the electric wiring and dynamo (which, in reality, are the only two items which strictly pertain to the electric lighting equipment) are in nearly every instance less in cost than would be an equipment for any other system of producing light. The question of the possible use of a switchboard and storage battery merit consideration. A switchboard, which usually consists of a slate or marble slab on which are mounted switches, instruments for recording the current, and like accessories, is not an essential of an electric lighting plant, although it will enable the operator to handle his equipment more intelligently and may possibly reduce the element of uncertainly and consequent injury to the equipment.
