The commutator and head end of the armature are entirely inclosed and protected by cast-iron covers which fit closely to the frame, protecting it from moisture and mechanical injury, and which may be readily removed for inspection. The wires leading to the commutator and field will he brought through the frame in water-tight gaskets. The peculiar construction of field, which is standard with this company, insures an equal energization of all of the poles, allows of the least possible weight of steel and the smallest size and weight of field energizing coils, all of which contribute to the highest efficiency. The armature is built up of laminated soft iron of the highest magnetic permeability, and is all tested before being used for low hysteresis and other loss. The armature is of slotted pattern and is wound with form coils machine made, the winding being of the drum or barrel type. The commutator is of pure drawn copper, insulated with pure mica. The insulation of copper and armature windings is guaranteed to be of more than 1 megohm and is tested with a voltage of 2.000 volts A. C. The brushes are of carbon of ample area. The bearings are of bronze, self-oiling, and have a large oil well. These motors are guaranteed to be of the best workmanship and of the highest efficiency. It is also guaranteed that their temperature under operating conditions, with the specified load, would not be more than 40 C. above surrounding atmosphere. Control.--The appearance of the control mechanism is given on the photograph marked No. 2-'u. This consists of three electric solenoid switches mounted upon a heavy slate board which is attached to an iron base and frame. The two solenoids on the left...
