If the product has not so many places, supply the defect by prefixing cyphers. Sec example 3d. Case I. When both factors are sinite, proceed as in integers. II. When one of the factors is sinite, and the other repeats, multiply by the sinite factor, and carry by 9 on the right; then extend and add them as in addition. III. When both factors repeat, reduce either of them to a vulgar fraction, and take parts of the multiplicand for it. Ex. 1st,.627 Ex. 2d, 168-25 Ex-3di-1684 43-35-r5.26961 58.8875.025260 The reason of sixing the decimal point, as directed, appears by constdering that the operation here is the fame as in multiplication of vulgar fractions: thus in example ist, 627 X.43 =,gaVo X-Ars= 1VoVoV or.26961 by the nature of notation, and has as many places as one in both numbers; for since each decimal place in either factor diminishes its value ten times, it must equally diminish the value of the product. To multiply hy 10, remove the decimal point one place to the Vight; to multiply by 100, 1000, or the like, remove it as many places as there are cyphers.
