By Elasticity is meant the property which bodies have of tending to return to their original figure or volume, after one or both have been altered liy the operation of external forces. Elasticity of volume is the tendency of a substance to regain its original volume, after having been compressed into a smaller space; it is common to solids and fluids. The only difference in this respect between gases and liquids, is that the variations of volume in the latter, produced by compressing forces, are very small. Elasticity of figure, or the tendency to return to their original figure, is peculiar to solids. The property which they alone possess, of resisting change of figure, is called Rigidity. A body is perfectly elastic which recovers its previous volume, or volume and figure, when the external stress is withdrawn. The elasticity of every solid is nearly perfect when the strain does not exceed a certain limit. This has been proved to be the case even with such plastic solids as moistened clay. In every solid there are limits, which if a strain exceed, a set, or permanent change of figure, is produced; such a limit is called the limit of elasticity, and is less, often considerably less, than the strain required to produce fracture. Hodgkinson has shown that this limit partly depends on the duration of the strain, being lower for a long continued strain, than for a short one. The elasticity of volume of solids is found to be more nearly perfect than that of figure. A solid with very imperfect elasticity of figure is called plastic; the gradations from plastic solids to viscous liquids being insensible. 32.
