Describing the action of the escort when certain narrated events occur, e.g., if the enemy is reported to be advancing from some named quarter, or to be occupying a position barring the march of the convoy, etc. 3. A statement, with reasons, may be asked for of what would be a suitable strength and composition for an escort under certain given circumstances. It may therefore be well to consider in the first place the conditions affecting this strength and composition. Strength Of The Escort Of Convoy. The strength of a convoy will depend on:--1. The length of the convoy on the line of march and its value. 2. The nature of the country. 3. The disposition of the inhabitants. 4. The distance to be traversed. 5. The chance of meeting the enemy. As these conditions vary very greatly, it is impossible to lay down any given strength. Composition Of The Escort. The proportion of each arm will depend chiefly on the nature of the country through which the march lies. Early information as to the presence, movements and intentions of the enemy is very desirable; and, therefore, there must always be sufficient Cavalry for extensive reconnoitring. Artillery will also be useful to supplement the defensive power of the Infantry; and to engage any guns the attacking force may have. Engineers may be useful to remove obstacles, repair roads, etc. SEQUENCE OF STEPS IN WORKING OUT A CONVOY PROBLEM. First Step. Choose (if not given) the road by which the Convoy shall march. Second Step. Determine (if not given) the strength and composition of a suitable Escort. Third Step.
