Synopsis
The second edition of Virology is an accessible introduction designed to enable students to understand the principles of virus structure, replication and genetics. The aim of this book is to help the reader appreciate the relevance of virology in the modern world, including the fields of vaccines, anti-viral drugs and cancer. There is also a chapter on prions. The second edition has been extensively revised and updated to reflect the many developments in virology and offers deeper insights into the subject. Newly-discovered viruses are discussed and there is an additional chapter on the influenza virus.

Review
This remains an excellent textbook for any student studying virology as part of their degree. The early chapters provide a thorough and clearly written background to the necessary molecular biology, and are suitable both for the beginner but also as a short refresher course. The book uses figures and schematics extremely well to explain a number of diverse virus replication cycles in helpful stages, building towards the bigger picture each time. Supporting chapters exploring concepts such as vaccines, therapeutics and pathology make the book a very complete yet a compact review of modern virology. I highly recommend this book.
