Ying Tan is a successful entrepreneur, financial services innovator and mortgage expert. He is the CEO of Dynamo, the UK’s leading mortgage broker. Ying began his career in investment banking and was one of the youngest Vice Presidents ever at Goldman Sachs. Drawing upon his experience in negotiating mortgage deals as he grew his personal property portfolio, Ying saw a business opportunity in the “buy to let” mortgage market. He founded The Buy To Let Business (now Dynamo) in 2006. Ying’s company has since diversified into residential mortgages, fintech and other financial services. Today, Dynamo generates roughly £2.8 billion of mortgage business annually, has an annual turnover of £12 million and employs 200 members of staff.
Ying Tan learned the value of perseverance, determination, self-respect and hard work at an early age. He spent his formative years growing up on a council estate in Farnborough, his parents working long hours at two jobs so they could eventually afford to buy their own home. Ying was raised in a family proud of their Chinese heritage, which helped him overcome racism whenever he encountered it. From his first job – a trolley boy at his local Asda supermarket – he went on to embark upon a business journey that led him from unpaid investment banking intern to one of the youngest Vice Presidents at Goldman Sachs. However, Ying was always an entrepreneur at heart, and he eventually left the banking world to found and become CEO of one of the leading mortgage brokers in the UK. He has never forgotten his roots and is passionate about sharing his long journey to success, including all its highs and lows, with anyone who may find value in his experiences.
In Don’t Push Too Many Trolleys, Ying Tan shares his fascinating personal story, and the key principles that have underpinned his success in business and in life.
