Excerpt: ... section xii. on the mode of delivering the bread and wine to the communicants. On this point the Rubric is so express, that it would have been unnecessary to say one word on the subject, but for the circumstance of a practice having been adopted from the first Prayer Book of Edw. vi., clearly opposed to what is now required. The Rubric directs,--"Then shall the minister first receive the "Communion in both kinds himself, and then proceed to deliver "the same to the Bishops, Priests, and Deacons in like manner, "(if any be present) and after that to the people also in order, "into their hands, all meekly kneeling." The direction is so precise, that the Communion in both kinds is to be delivered "into their hands," that there is no pretext for even raising a doubt on the subject. And the same direction, (with the exception of the word "in " for "into") was given in all the preceding Reformed Prayer Books, except the first of Edward vi., where it was ordered, that the people should " commonly receive the Sacrament of Christ's body in their mouths at the priest's hand." (Rubric at end of Communion Service.) But as has been already observed, the directions on such subjects in this Book are of no authority. The mere withdrawal of directions given in this Book, in the Books of Common Prayer that succeeded it, is a strong testimony adverse to the legality of their being now followed.
