Synopsis

For decades a bitter civil war between the Colombia government and armed insurgent groups tore apart Colombian society. After protracted negotiations in Havana, a peace agreement was accepted by the Colombian government and the FARC rebel group in 2016. This volume will provide academics and practitioners throughout the world with critical analyses regarding what we know generally about the post-war peace building process and how this can be applied to the specifics of the Colombian case to assist in the design and implementation of post-war peace building programs and policies. This unique group of Colombian and international scholars comment on critical aspects of the peace process in Colombia, transitional justice mechanisms, the role of state and non-state actors at the national and local levels, and examine what the Colombian case reveals about traditional theories and approaches to peace and transitional justice.

About the Authors

James Meernik is Regents Professor of Political Science and Director of the Castleberry Peace Institute at the University of North Texas. Currently, Professor Meernik is working on projects related to the peace process and transitional justice in Colombia, victim and witness testimony at international tribunals, and the impact of international tribunals on peace and human rights. He has authored over seventy articles and book chapters and has authored or co-edited eight books on international relations.

Jacqueline DeMeritt is Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science and the Castleberry Peace Institute at the University of North Texas. Her research investigates reasons and remedies for human rights abuse. Current projects investigate how countries build institutions that monitor their treatment of civilians, the effects of gender on political violence, and the movements and motivations of Hitler's death squads, the Einsatzgruppen. Recent work has appeared in journals such as the American Journal of Political Science, the Journal of Conflict Resolution, and International Interactions

Mauricio Uribe-López is Full Professor and Head of the Government and Political Sciences Department at the Universidad EAFIT (Medellin, Colombia). He won an Honorable Mention in Social Sciences, awarded by the Alejandro Ángel Foundation in 2012 and he is the author of La Nación Vetada: Estado, Desarrollo y Guerra Civil en Colombia (2013).
