Book Description

Swiss diplomat Aimé Humbert (1819–1900) first published in French in 1866 his account of life under the Tokugawa shogunate in its final years. Reissued here is the 1874 English translation, updated with descriptions of the 1868 revolution and its aftermath, and including almost 200 illustrations taken from Japanese prints.

About the Author

Henry Walter Bates was an English naturalist and explorer who gave the first scientific account of mimicry in animals. He was most famous for his expedition to the Amazon with Alfred Russel Wallace in 1848.
