Eckermann's recollections of his conversations with Goethe during the last nine years of his life were originally published in three volumes in Germany in 1836 and 1848. This two-volume English edition, published in 1850, helped to reawaken interest in Goethe. Volume 2 covers 1827 to 1832.

The German poet, novelist, playwright, courtier, scientist, and philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) ranks among the greatest authors of Western literature. His best known writings include "The Sorrows of Young Werther" (his first novel) and "Faust" (a drama in two parts).
