The repeated assertion that "the Assyrians disappeared following the fall of the Assyrian Empire, and that no subsequent references to them or their cities exist," has long circulated in both popular and, at times, scholarly discourse. The persistence of this claim-frequently advanced without critical examination-dictates a methodical evaluation. It is precisely this historiographical problem that motivated me to publish my present study on Assyrian continuity.

The present work advances its argument through three principal approaches. First, it draws on Assyrian and non-Assyrian sources, including Arabic, Persian, Turkish, and various European accounts. Second, it adopts a wider perspective, incorporating evidence from late antiquity, the classical period, the medieval era, and the early modern period. Third, it examines indicators of continuity through cultural and linguistic aspects, including personal names, geographical designations, and explicit ethnonyms. Collectively, these materials challenge the assertion that Assyrians and their cultural presence disappeared from the historical record. This study also builds upon and expands on materials previously presented in my earlier work, Assyrians: The Continuous Saga (2004).
