First Principles of a New System of Philosophy, by English philosopher, biologist, anthropologist, and sociologist Herbert Spencer, was originally published in 1867. Spencer intended First Principles to be a preface to his comprehensive study of the world, entitled The Synthetic Philosophy (1862-1896). However, he made it an entirely independent work, standing alone, that not merely announced the principles of evolutionary naturalism but illustrated them fully with examples from all fields of knowledge.
