The English Springer Spaniel is a breed of gun dog that was developed in England in the mid-19th century. However Spaniel-type dogs have been present within English art and literature for over 500 years. Traditionally the English Springer Spaniel was not used to retrieve game, during a hunt, but would rather flush the game out of their hiding spots and chase them towards the guns. The breeds role during hunts lead to it being called the ‘Springer’ due to the fact that it would ‘spring’ prey into flight. The English Springer Spaniel is very similar to the English Cocker Spaniel and at first glance there seems to be no differences – other than the English Springer Spaniel being larger in size. However the English Cocker Spaniel tends to have longer ears and the English Springer Spaniel tends to have a longer muzzle and a less abundant coat. The English Springer Spaniel is now commonly used as a sniffer dog throughout the world.
