The Borzoi is a breed of domestic dog that originates from Russia. The breed is also commonly known as the Russian Wolfhound and the Russian Hunting Sighthound. In Russian the breeds name, ‘Borzoi,’ literally translates to ‘fast.’ As the name suggests the Borzoi is an especially fast moving and athletic breed which is built in a similar shape to the Greyhound. The Borzoi was originally developed to be a sighthound capable of chasing down foxes, hares and other small game and keeping up with horse-mounted hunters. However the breed was quickly used to hunt wolves. Hunters would release two or three Borzoi to pursue a wolf. The dogs would pursue the wolf and attack it from multiple angels. If the Borzoi were successful they would hold the wolf by the neck until the hunter arrived. However, in modern times the Borzoi is mainly found as a domestic household pet. The Borzoi makes a perfect household pet due to its intelligence, loyalty and lack of territorial instinct – which makes the breed very accepting of other animals and strangers. The breed is also known to be very quiet and hardly ever bark. The Borzoi has a long top coat and a shorter, thicker under coat. The breed’s coat can come in virtually any coloration.
