Synopsis

This teaching manual details an integrated approach to learning marine science using field- and inquiry-based exercises. The fundamental concepts of the course are synthesized through a series of activities presented in the context of an overarching theme. The overarching theme for the course consists of three major components: cyclicity, gradients, and biodiversity. These three themes have been refined over the years, through the use of field-based exercises, to focus on the connections between the biological and the physical characteristics that define various ecosystems along the NJ shoreline. An important aspect of this focus is that these connections relate to different environmental settings, such as salt marshes, sandy beaches, mudflats, and rocky intertidal areas. Consequently, while the individual biological/physical connections will differ among these environments, the overarching themes will be the same, and therefore the themes will act as the connecting thread throughout the course. This allows students to see the same principles being expressed in different ways depending on the environment. This teaching manual allows these connections to be formally organized into a single document, providing a single, integrated source that can be used by our students and potentially by other instructors at different institutions.
