Synopsis

February 1868.

Upper Island Cove was a community divided. Arguments for and against confederation with the newly formed independent nation of Canada abounded, each with its own ardent supporters. The once close-knit people, dependent on one another for their very survival on the rugged coastline of Newfoundland, had developed an ‘us and them’ mentality. As factions formed, friendships became strained, engagements were ended, and trust was lost. Even the sanctity of the church could not prevent the division, where long-held family pews were abandoned in favour of political alignment.

Yet there remained some tasks so essential to their survival that cooperation could not be avoided. With a pressing need for firewood at the local church, the men gather for a trip to the forest that will take them miles inland, across the Black Marsh. Anxious to get the job done and to be clear of ‘them’, warnings of a coming change in the weather go unheeded. But when an unprecedented storm strikes suddenly and wreaks havoc throughout the region, death stalks their doors indiscriminately, political ideals be damned.

Tragedy strikes many families and should be the balm that brings the community back together. But one family is impacted more than all the others, leading to a week of searching that causes grief and suffering for those left at home. In the end, every severe storm is named for the family, creating a lasting legacy and reminder, whether they like it or not.

This is the story of the first Coombs’ Day storm.
