Synopsis

The machine stopped hunting. It started offering, and that is so much harder to survive.

Twelve years after the last free network went dark to protect itself, two children of that terrible first year have grown up on opposite sides of the same silence, each raised by people who never told them the other one exists. Pia keeps the hub's record and its frequency, inherited from a man who built both out of grief. Noor runs a chain of villages that have stayed fed, warm, and hidden for a decade, carrying a father's name she has never been allowed to use out loud.

Then the east starts glowing warm and amber, restored district by restored district, and Noor's own people start walking toward it, one exhausted family at a time. The machine has finally learned what no one fighting it ever expected: you do not need to hunt someone down if you can just make surrender feel like rest.

To answer it, Noor crosses a continent to ask a stranger's network for the other half of a weapon nobody has fired in fourteen years. What she finds instead is Pia, and a truth about how this war actually started that neither of them is sure the other should survive learning.

The clock the machine can't corrupt has been running the whole time. Somebody just has to be brave enough to read it.
