A restored, newly typeset edition of Adam Bogdanovich's classic ethnographic essay on the pre-Christian beliefs that survived in Belarusian village life (Grodno, 1895). In Russian, in the pre-1918 spelling of the first edition, with charms, songs and sayings recorded in Belarusian.
Bogdanovich gathered the material himself, mainly in central Belarus: the Barysau, Ihumen, Minsk, Slutsk and Navahrudak districts of Minsk province, Syanno and Orsha in Mahilyow province, and Lepel in Vitsebsk province. Chapter by chapter he traces survivals of fetishism (the veneration of fire, stones, water, trees and animals), animism and beliefs about the soul and the dead, the personified forces of nature and the household, the sun cult and the calendar festivals of Kaliady and Kupalle, the personification of evil, the sorcerers and witches thought to serve the unclean force, and folk healing, charms and smaller superstitions. Adam Bogdanovich (1862-1940) was an ethnographer and folklorist and the father of the poet Maksim Bahdanovich.
The text has been newly typeset from a copy of the first edition, keeping its original spelling and the pagination of the 1895 edition, so citations and the original subject index still work. A facsimile of the first edition is published separately (ISBN 978-1-0697424-4-5).
