"This research supports joint DOE/DoD requirements for a viable nuclear weapons sustainment and modernization policy into the twenty-first century. It focuses on a three-part modernization and rejuvenation program for the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile, the associated DOE infrastructure, and the DOE manpower/technical base, making the case for improvements to each in a manner that will further U.S. national interests. This program has been designed to achieve broad political and popular support, support national and international nonproliferation efforts, and enable a reduction in the U.S. nuclear stockpile -- while maintaining the efficacy of nuclear weapons and nuclear deterrence as a vital mission to the national security. It also stresses the importance of fulfilling extended deterrence commitments to allies as a means to preclude proliferation."--Abstract from web site.
