Les premières loges maçonniques en Orient musulman virent le jour à l'initiative de diplomates, de commerçants et de résidents étrangers. Du Maroc à l'Indonésie, elles furent nombreuses et prospères tant que le pouvoir en place - faible ou aux mains d'Européens - les tolérait ou les soutenait. Longtemps, l'initiation d'indigènes resta inenvisageable ou écartée pour cause de différences tenant à la religion, au niveau et au mode d'éducation ou au statut du pays. Cet obstacle fut franchi au début du XIXe siècle. La croyance en un Dieu unique, éventuellement désigné par l'expression oecuménique " Grand Architecte de l'Univers ", était partagée, le néophyte pouvant exiger la présence du livre saint de son choix lors de sa réception. Des notables et même des souverains (Turquie, Maroc, Inde) entrèrent ainsi dans l'Ordre. L'étonnante similitude de certaines entités doctrinales orientales (bektachisme), depuis toujours implantées et acceptées, avec les pratiques des loges, facilita cette expansion. Les rapports s'inversèrent avec l'irruption de trois facteurs conjugués : la suppression, par la principale obédience française, en 1877, de l'obligation de croire en Dieu et en l'immortalité de l'âme - et la radicalisation extrême de régimes politiques orientaux hostiles à toute réunion ou organisme agissant sous le sceau du secret. Les rites et les mythes maçonniques étant largement inspirés, jusque dans les hauts grades, par l'Ancien et le Nouveau Testament, le soupçon, répandu par une abondante littérature antimaçonnique, selon lequel la franc-maçonnerie est un tentacule sioniste, fit le reste. Les loges ne subsistent plus, de nos jours, que dans quatre des pays où l'islam est prépondérant : la Turquie, le Liban, la Malaisie et le Maroc. Ce livre est l'histoire d'une relation qui fut féconde et fraternelle.

About the Author
Thierry Zarcone est directeur de recherches au Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique à Paris (Groupe Sociétés Religions Laïcité). Spécialiste de l'islam et des systèmes de pensée dans l'aire turco-persane, il est l'auteur de plusieurs livres et de nombreux articles sur le sujet et, en particulier, sur l'histoire du soufisme et du chamanisme dans l'Empire ottoman, en Turquie, en Asie centrale et au Turkestan oriental.
