Comment concilier le Coran et la science moderne Dans le monde d'aujourd'hui, l'islam occupe une place de plus en plus importante. Cela pose de façon cruciale la question de la compatibilité entre la vision coranique du monde et les connaissances scientifiques actuelles, qui font partie intégrante de la modernité. Cependant, les tentatives de positionnement de l'islam vis-à-vis de la science moderne ont été jusqu'ici infructueuses car elles trahissaient souvent un parti pris particulier : soit hyper-traditionaliste, en désaccord avec certains résultats de la science, soit hyper-positiviste, s'opposant à certains principes islamiques. Ce livre, destiné aussi bien aux musulmans qu'aux non-musulmans, montre qu'il est possible de construire une approche rigoureuse et respectueuse de la science moderne et de l'islam (le Coran, en particulier). Prenant pour modèle conceptuel le philosophe andalou Averroès, l'auteur propose une voie médiane, écartant des démarches erronées telles que, d'une part, la théorie du "contenu scientifique miraculeux du Coran", le littéralisme religieux ou la "science sacrée", et, d'autre part, le scientisme et le postmodernisme, qui ne respectent pas la religion et/ou la science moderne. Alliant un langage clair, accessible aux non-spécialistes, à la rigueur scientifique, l'auteur passe en revue tous les fondements (Dieu, le Coran et la science) puis traite en détail la question de la conciliation du Coran avec les principes, la méthodologie et les théories et résultats de la science moderne. De nombreux exemples actuels sont présentés et discutés. Ce travail représente une démarche cruciale pour une conciliation indispensable de l'islam avec la science et la modernité, offrant une solution possible à l'alternative qui prévaut actuellement entre le littéralisme religieux et le matérialisme "moderniste".

Astrophysicien, Nidhal Guessoum a été formé aux Etats-Unis et a travaillé au Goddard Space Flight Center de la NASA. Chercheur et intellectuel actif, il est actuellement professeur à l'université américaine de Sharjah (Emirats arabes unis). Il est l'auteur de nombreux articles et livres, dont La détermination des mois lunaires et le calendrier islamique et L'histoire de l'Univers, tous deux publiés en Algérie et au Liban.
