Synopsis

In this book, Loewy and Reese criticize the popular delusions that they perceive to be rampant in New York in the late 19th century, particularly in the areas of science, philosophy, and religion. They argue that many of the beliefs and practices that are widely accepted at the time are based on dubious or false premises, and call for a more rational and sceptical approach to knowledge. This volume is a thought-provoking analysis of the intellectual and cultural trends of its time, and will appeal to readers interested in the history of ideas.
